From January to April, retail sales of consumer goods totaled 15.6026 trillion yuan, an increase of 4.1 percent over the same period last year. Of this total, retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles totaled 14.1396 trillion yuan, up 4.3 percent.
According to the location of the business unit, retail sales of consumer goods in cities and towns totaled 3.1026 trillion yuan in April, an increase of 2.1 percent over the same period last year.CrouchingdragonhiddentigerswordofdestinyRetail sales of rural consumer goods totaled 467.3 billion yuan, an increase of 3.5 percent. From January to April, retail sales of consumer goods in cities and towns totaled 13.5307 trillion yuan, up 4.0 percent, while retail sales of rural consumer goods totaled 2.0719 trillion yuan, up 4.8 percent.
According to the type of consumption, in April, retail sales totaled 3.1784 trillion yuan, up 2.0 percent over the same period last year, and catering income was 391.5 billion yuan, up 4.4 percent. From January to April, retail sales totaled 13.8666 trillion yuan, up 3.5 percent, and catering revenue totaled 1.736 trillion yuan, up 9.3 percent.
According to the retail sector, from January to April, retail sales in professional stores, convenience stores and supermarkets in retail units above the quota increased by 5.7%, 4.8% and 1.8% respectively compared with the same period last year, while retail sales in department stores and brand stores decreased by 3.5% and 0.6% respectively.
From January to April, online retail sales nationwide totaled 4.411 trillion yuan, an increase of 11.5 percent over the same period last year. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods totaled 3.7356 trillion yuan, up 11.1 percent, accounting for 23.9 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods. Among the online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing and household goods increased by 19.2 percent, 10.5 percent and 9.8 percent, respectively.

1. Index interpretation
Total retail sales of consumer goods: refers to the amount of physical goods sold by enterprises (units and self-employed) to individuals and social groups for non-production and non-business use, as well as the amount of income obtained by providing catering services.
Online retail sales: refers to the sum of retail sales of goods and services realized through public online trading platforms (including self-built websites and third-party platforms). Goods and services include physical goods and non-physical goods (such as virtual goods, service goods, etc.).
The total amount of retail sales of consumer goods includes online retail sales of physical goods, but does not include online retail sales of non-physical goods.
2. Statistical range
Legal person enterprises, industrial activity units and self-employed enterprises engaged in commodity retail activities or providing catering services. Among them, the units above the quota refer to wholesale enterprises (units, self-employed) with annual main business income of 20 million yuan or more, retail enterprises (units, self-employed) with annual main business income of 5 million yuan or more, and accommodation and catering enterprises (units, self-employed) with 2 million yuan or more.
As the scope of wholesale and retail, accommodation and catering enterprises (units, self-employed) above the quota changes from year to year, in order to ensure that this year's data is comparable to that of the previous year, the number of the same period used to calculate the year-on-year growth rate of various indicators such as the retail sales of consumer goods above the quota is consistent with the statistical scope of the enterprises (units, self-employed) of the current period, and there is a caliber difference with the data released last year. The main reason is that every year, some enterprises (units, self-employed) meet the quota standard and are included in the scope of the investigation, while some enterprises (units, self-employed) withdraw from the scope of the investigation because the scale is smaller than the quota standard. there is also the impact of new business, bankruptcy, note (hanging) sales enterprises (units, self-employed).
3. Investigation method
All the units above the quota shall be investigated, and the units below the quota shall be sampled.
4. Revision of quarter-on-quarter data
According to the results of the automatic correction of the seasonal adjustment model, the month-on-month growth rate of retail sales of social consumer goods since April 2023 is revised. The revised results and month-on-month figures for April 2024 are as follows:
