TEHRAN, AugTiger'sRichesRush. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani and Saudi Arabia's Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim al-Khereiji met in Jeddah on Thursday to discuss the assassination of Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh and to review bilateral relations.

Their meeting took place a day after the Saudi Arabian port city hosted an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) focused on Haniyeh's assassination, according to a statement released by Iran's Foreign Ministry.

Bagheri Kani condemned Israel for what he called the "crime" of assassinating Haniyeh, who had been visiting Iran as an official guest, and said that such actions had deepened Israel's "political isolation."

He said relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia were moving in the right direction, expressing hope that bilateral ties would continue to strengthen under the new Iranian administration.

The Saudi minister said all countries participating in the OIC meeting had voiced support for Iran in condemning the recent Israeli "crime."

The Saudi diplomat highlighted his country's principled position against any terrorist actions and violation of other countries' national sovereignty and security.

He added that relations between Riyadh and Tehran were progressing favorably, stressing that his country attached special importance to the expansion of bilateral ties.

During the meeting, the two officials also discussed consular affairs, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Haniyeh, who had been invited to attend Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony on July 30, was killed along with his bodyguard the next day when their residence in Tehran was hit. Iran accused Israel of carrying out the attack and vowed "a harsh and painful response."

At the end of its extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, the OIC issued a statement holding Israel fully responsible for the "heinous attack" and the "serious infringement" of Iran's sovereignty.
